  • Alpine Lakes Itinerary

    Christchurch > Queenstown > Aoraki / Mount Cook

  • DAY 1

    Christchurch

    Start your journey in the vibrant city of Christchurch, the largest centre in the South Island, where old English gardens contrast with pop-up bars and fascinating street art.

    Christchurch offers an amazing array of activities, try punting down the Avon River, biking in the surrounding Port Hills, or take an early morning ride in a hot air balloon.

  • DAY 2

    Lake Tekapo

    As you travel through the patchwork fields of the Canterbury Plains, take time to visit some of the small towns along the way.

    With its stunning turquoise water, Lake Tekapo offers a magnificent spectacle year-round. There are so many ways to enjoy this part of the country – hiking, fishing or relaxing in hot pools while gazing at the lake.

    Head to the Mount John Observatory and take in unobstructed views of a star filled sky.

  • DAY 3

    Lake Tekapo - Aoraki/Mount Cook

    From Lake Tekapo head to Mount Cook Village, at the foot of the country's highest peak.

    This region is a mountaineer's dream, offering some of the best climbing experiences in Australasia. For the less adventurous, choose from the array of shorter walks and take in the stunning alpine landscapes of herb fields, morraines, glaciers and cheeky kea.

    Mount Cook National Park is also the home of New Zealand's longest glacier.

  • DAY 4

    Aoraki/Mount Cook - Wanaka

    Travel past turquoise lakes and rivers to the lakeside resort town of Wanaka.
    Set alongside the renown Mt Aspiring National Park, Wanaka is the ultimate outdoor utopia.

    Hiking, biking both on and off road, water activities, airborne adventures and climbing there is something for all, no matter your flavour of fun.

  • DAY 5

    Wanaka - Queenstown

    From Wanaka it is a short journey across to Queenstown, the adventure capitalof New Zealand.

    Thrill yourself with a huge choice of adrenaline activities including jetboating, bungy jumping, white water rafting and skydiving – all guaranteed to get your blood pumping!

    Explore Queenstown

    An easy drive from central Queenstown, Arrowtown is a perfectly preserved piece of gold rush history.

    Explore the Chinese gold miners’ settlement by the Arrow River, visit the Lakes District Museum, then find a convivial café to soak up the surroundings.

    Those looking for more adventure can try horse riding in Glenorchy. Don't forget to check out some of the Lord of the Rings filming locations while you're there.

  • DAY 1

    Auckland to Hamilton via Raglan

    Starting from Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland, travel south through suburban scenery towards the laid-back beach town of Whāingaroa/Raglan - home to one of the longest left-hand surf breaks in the world.

    Spend the day learning to surf or explore the town with its many cafes, surf shops and galleries. Raglan is also home to Wairēinga/Bridal Veil Falls- a 55-metre-high waterfall which looks like a brides vail.

    Continue onto Hamilton, where a myriad of attractions await.

  • DAY 2

    Hamilton to Rotorua

    Rotorua sits squarely on the Pacific Ring of Fire and geothermal activity breathes through every part of the region.

    The Rotorua region is home to eighteen lakes, all with historical Māori culture signifigence and frequented by local swimmers, anglers and boats.

    This area is also a hub for adrenaline junkies. Get your heart pumping with the luge, OGO and shweeb.

  • DAY 3

    Rotorua to Taupō

    As you journey towards Taupō, take time to visit the magnificent Orakei Korako Cave & Geothermal Park home to some of the country's most remarkable geothermal features.

    The largest freshwater lake in Australasia, Lake Taupō is a great place for a guided boat cruise to giant Ngatoroirangi Mine Bay Māori rock carvings or hire a kayak and discover the lake at your own pace.

    At Huka Prawn Park, you can treat yourself to delicious prawns at the restaurants and fun walk around the prawn park.

  • DAY 4

    Taupō to Napier

    The road from Taupō to Napier takes you through fantastic scenery with rugged hills, beautiful valleys, gentle plains and huge vistas.

    Once in the Hawke’s Bay you will discover a fertile wine-growing region that boasts one of the world’s best collections of Art Deco architecture.

    Nearby Cape Kidnappers is home to the world’s largest gannet colony which can be reached on foot, by kayak or on a tractor. The Cape also happens to have one of the country’s best golf courses.

    Explore Auckland City

    Spend the day getting to know the vibrant ‘City of Sails’ with a huge range of activities and attractions on your doorstep.

    The Sky Tower offers 360-degree views of New Zealand’s biggest city. Get your adrenaline pumping while you're there with a SkyWalk or SkyJump. Those who like to keep their feet firmly on the ground may prefer a trip to the Auckland Museum or Auckland Art Gallery for a glimpse into New Zealand's unique history and culture.

  • DAY 3

    Visit Auckland's West Coast

    Auckland's West Coast is home to a rugged windswept coastline, long, black-sand beaches and pristine native rainforest. Home to some of the country's most remarkable geothermal features.

    Spend the afternoon on the rugged black-san beach of Piha. Climb Lion Rock and watch experienced surfers ride the waves. The lagoon at Bethalls Beach makes a great swimming spot or you can follow the trail that crosses the northern headland to secluded O'Neill Bay, another favourite with surfers.
